This diminutive ground sloth was an early member of the ground sloths and came from the Santa Cruz formation in Argentina. Grasses representing the groups danthonioidea and panicoideae are in the background, showing the savannah-like habitat of the Santa Cruz formation.
The large megatherid ground sloth drifts asleep as it wallows. Egrets take advantage of the mud disturbance and pick off small morsels. Size comparison between the elephant-sized eremotherium, a 1.8m human, and the small early ground sloth, hapalops.
